Backend Developer (all genders)

Job Description

Join our growing Roland Berger AI Lab to build reliable, secure backends that power agentic and LLM-enabled applications. You will design and implement APIs, core domain logic, and integrations; enable evaluation and finetuning workflows. Collaborate with DevOps and architects to deliver robust systems from PoV to large-scale deployment. Expect hands-on Python development, clean interfaces, robust testing, performance-oriented design, clear documentation and ownership. 

You will build and wire front ends for agentic systems, with proper logging, monitoring, tracing, scalability patterns, and responsible AI guardrails by design. 

Qualifications

  • Degree in Computer Science/Engineering or equivalent experience 
  • 4+ years of experience building production backends 
  • Proficiency in Python, including typing, packaging, testing and profiling 
  • Proven experience in API design and implementation, MCP including authentication, tenancy, and rate limiting
  • Hands-on experience with observability tools (e.g. metrics, logs, tracing) and service reliability best practices
  • Proficiency in CI/CD pipelines and containerized delivery using tools such as Docker and Azure DevOps
  • Expertise in asynchronous/event-driven patterns, job queues and scheduling, including caching and performance tuning
  • Strong understanding of data modeling and integrations (SQL/NoSQL/object stores), as well as integration with third-party systems
  • Familiarity with LLM/agent runtimes, including tool calling, orchestration and evaluation loop design 
  • Excellent communication skills in English
