My path to Deutsche Bank Management Consulting:

After my apprenticeship at a German savings bank I knew that I would like to pursue a career in Finance. Therefore, I studied Banking and Finance at the University of Cologne in Germany and subsequently joined the Deutsche Bank Graduate Programme. After 2 years, when the programme came to an end, I was very well connected within DB and got the chance to move to London and work for the Risk Culture team. After 1 year, I was looking for a new challenge. DMBC, which was already established in Frankfurt and Singapore, just set up its London office and I took the opportunity and joined the newly formed team. It was great to be part of that group from the beginning and enabled me to help growing the team and client portfolio.

I joined Deutsche Bank Management Consulting because:

I like the idea of a new challenge / project every few months while at the same time getting deep insights into the bank.

A typical day at work:

We work very close as team, therefore first thing in the morning I connect with my team members to understand how they are doing. Reading emails and checking the diary is crucial to plan the next hours. During the day, we usually have meetings with our stakeholders where we discuss various topics. Depending on the project phase, we continue with preparing presentations and analyses.

The most rewarding part of my job:

It feels very rewarding to me when working with a ‘client’ (the area / team at DB we are supporting) for a while, I start to notice them trusting and appreciating our work. In many cases, our client brings DBMC on board, share their visions and goals with us and we work jointly on achieving that. Many great relationships and even friendships have been forged over the years. It is rewarding to work with a wide range of bright, motivated and hard-working people, ranging from analysts to management board members. I have the feeling that all those interactions and project challenges gave me the chance to learn something new.

When I am not working:

During the lockdown I naturally spend time with my husband, my two young children and connect with friends / family in Germany. Once travel restrictions are lifted, we will start travelling to many countries again.

What I would like to tell a potential candidate about Deutsche Bank Management Consulting:

Join DBCM if you would like to work not only for a multinational financial services company, but also in a management consulting setting. If you enjoy project work, solving problems and are looking for a challenge, this could be a rewarding opportunity for you.

My path to Deutsche Bank Management Consulting:

I joined Deutsche Bank Management Consulting (DBMC) in June 2018 from a US bank, which I joined after completing my MBA at Georgetown University in Washington DC. During my time with the bank, I worked in the Strategy & Execution team for Small Business Banking, and the Pricing Strategy & Economics team for Consumer Banking. Prior to my MBA, I spent three years between Shanghai and Singapore working at a multinational semi-conductor manufacturer, where I set up the Financial Planning and Analysis functionality in Mainland China and supported the regional CFO and CEO on China strategic initiatives. I started my career at KPMG in their Audit practice. I have a Bachelor degree of International Trade and Economics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

A typical day at work:

Starts from checking emails on my corporate phone to catch up what happened or is happening in Europe, as most of my projects are global in nature with project sponsors, stakeholders and DBMC colleagues in London and Frankfurt. It continues with a daily check-in together with my project team to talk about what’s been done, what’s planned to do for the day, and what we are trying to achieve for the next few weeks (updates to various governance, project sponsor presentation, etc.). The day goes by quite fast with client meetings, brainstorming with the team, content creation/ review / iteration.

I joined Deutsche Bank Management Consulting because

I wanted the opportunity to work at a global bank, where I can create value for the firm through project work partnering with senior leadership across functions and divisions, and take on meaningful responsibilities and be part of the changes.

When I am not working:

You can find me at museums in NYC or wherever I travelled. I am mesmerized by impressionist paintings and started to learn more about old master, Dutch painting and American paintings. I love traveling to Europe, where I can find all my favorite painters and stumped upon some paintings I never saw. The architecture in Europe is so beautiful and always makes me want to move there. Living here in NYC, I like to try restaurants with friends and there are over 500 restaurants on my list! I also enjoy theatre, shows and concerts (took some acting class when I lived in DC). I have been practicing Yoga for over 12 years but I started running in the central park lately to get out after a day of work.

The most rewarding part of my job:

I saw the Bloomberg articles about a project I worked on. And the opportunity to work with wonderful people on the team and across the bank!

In this Interview, Samia Sqalli talks about her attraction to consulting, her typical day and tipps for your career at DMBC.

Can you give us some background about your education and work experience?

I grew up in Morocco, then moved to Paris for my BSc in Finance, after which I spent 6 months in New York for an internship in a health care start-up. Thereafter, I took a gap year from my studies to complete two 6-month internships in Consulting. The first was with Boston Consulting Group where I focused on conducting African market studies, typically to assess new market entry opportunities for North African companies. For the second internship I joined Monitor Deloitte where I worked on a variety of due diligence projects in Francophone markets. I completed my MSc in Management at Cass Business School in London and shortly after joined DBMC as an Analyst in the London office.

Beyond this, I was able to participate in a volunteering programme at Cass for which I spent 2 months in the city of Helsinki helping start-ups with developing strategies for business development and growth.

What attracts you to Consulting?

The challenging environment and the aspect of problem solving really excites me. We are constantly trying to identify better, more suitable solutions that aren’t just conceptually good but that can also be implemented given the circumstances in the bank. What I like at DBMC is that we don’t just try to find ‘nice looking’ solutions that are going to be accepted and impress people. The solutions we seek need to match the problem, add value to the bank, and be actually feasible. In comparison to my experience with external consulting groups, we pay more attention to the whole package – both looking for the right solution and how can it be implemented.

Have you found any other differences between external and internal consulting?

Speaking from my experience, with internal consulting there is much more exposure to senior stakeholders, clients, and managers, this is especially important at more junior levels. I found that within external consulting, it is usually the Project Manager or Partner that interacts with the clients because there is a lot more pressure to present a polished image and sell the brand. The juniors would thus gain less exposure to clients and focus more on delivering the work, which of course is still important and valuable. In comparison, as a DBMC analyst, I have daily interactions with senior members which gives me the feeling of being really involved with the critical aspects of the problem which is very fulfilling.

At first, I found the environment very challenging, however, it provides a steep learning curve to develop both your analytical and conceptual knowledge and your personal and interpersonal skillsets. Further it is a great setting to grow because the DBMC team is very supportive and always willing to help and guide you.

What does your typical day at work look like?

While my days are quite varied, the most typical part would be arriving early morning and spending some time checking and responding to emails. Then as a project team we would check the schedule for the day and plan the upcoming work before we spread out work on deliverables, for example analysing data and creating aggregate results. Throughout the day I have a couple of client meetings, either in person or through conference calls, and oftentimes a project team meeting for brainstorming and problem solving. Additionally, there are usually frequent queries coming through from clients that need to be addressed on short notice, which you need to adapt to and it keeps things fast paced.

Would you recommend someone start off their career in DBMC?

Yes – DBMC is a really great place to learn the work of a consultant. It provides loads of exposure to senior stakeholders from which you can learn a lot and you develop deep knowledge of the workings of a bank and really any large corporation. The steep learning curve quickly encourages you to be self-sufficient and confident in your skillset. Analysts also complete a joint training in Frankfurt which is fantastic!

What advice would you give analysts starting out?

Be confident from day one and be proactive in developing relationships with your clients. These relationships can help you on other projects and in your personal development. They also grant you a more comprehensive view of the bank. Always be motivated and show willingness to progress, even when there are parts of the work that don’t necessarily excite you. There is always an opportunity to learn and this attitude encourages your team to trust you with more responsibility and more exciting tasks. Also, quickly identify your weaknesses so you can actively work on them as soon as possible and reach out to members of the team. They will happily help and support you to quickly progress.

Outside of work, what are your hobbies and interests?

I like swimming, outdoors preferably, and I’m interested in French politics and current affairs, so I watch French news, documentaries, and debates. I also enjoy relaxing with friends and socialising over a few cocktails. Since I am a very avid traveler, I try to get away every few weeks, even if it is just for a weekend.

What’s the culture within DBMC?

The culture and team are great. In French we say the team are very ‘Bienvenue’, they are very welcoming, supportive, and take a genuine interest in your life outside of work. They will always make time to help you with your development and they really care about the team as a whole becoming better and more effective.

The social aspect is also great, we often have team events which are a lot of fun. For example, we have had Go-Karting and Mini-Golf events, oftentimes after work we get drinks together, and generally everyone has a great sense of humor. Beyond the London office, I have also made friends with colleagues in New York and Frankfurt, either through working together on projects or through joint trainings.

After having finished my Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, I wanted to specialize more in Consulting and Strategy. Therefore, I pursued a Master’s degree in Business Analysis and Consulting in Paris. When the time for job applications came around, I pleasantly remembered my internship in Deutsche Bank’s Technology Practice in 2017. A friend of mine recommended specifically the consulting department of Deutsche Bank as a great place to start my professional career, which is why I decided to apply.

I joined Deutsche Bank Management Consulting because:

I remember asking that question provokingly during one of my interviews; why join Deutsche Bank Management Consulting with an existing offer in product management with a big tech company? The answer I received stuck with me: it is easier to start a career with a horizontal focus rather than a vertical one. It is always possible to specialize later after having started the career more universally, but after specializing in a certain field, increasing the scope of your work becomes more difficult. This advice fits joining DBMC very well: the work we do is very versatile and diversified as we collaborate with all businesses and infrastructure functions within the bank.

A typical day at work:

Usually, the day starts by aligning your priorities of the day with your project team (virtually [in COVID times] or preferably in person). After the check-in, the day heavily depends on the project: it could be that you are crunching numbers for a business case to gauge if a certain revenue initiative is worth the effort or you might organize a workshop to brainstorm potential digitization opportunities.

The most rewarding part of my job:

The responsibility given to you from day one is very fulfilling. If you prepared a concept or a specific deliverable, you can be certain that you will be the one to present it in front of the client. This close direct interaction with senior stakeholders ensures that you will become more confident of your abilities very quickly.

When I am not working:

I love playing the piano; sometimes I try to recreate a song I heard on the radio or during a movie by ear. Other than that, I like playing table tennis – even though my times in the sports club are long over, I enjoy meeting friends and colleagues for some games.

In this Interview, Stefan Bauer talks about his path to become an intern at Deutsche Bank Management Consulting and gives interesting insights into his daily tasks & experiences.

What was your path to Deutsche Bank Management Consulting?

After graduating from high school, I decided to pursue a degree in European Business. Following my first two years of study in Regensburg and the UK, I moved to Luxembourg to gain practical experience in institutional banking. During my time in Luxembourg, I was not only able to get a first insight into the world of finance but also developed a deep interest in the tremendous changes the financial industry is currently going through.
During my research for internship positions in financial services consulting, I came across DBMC’sjob posting on Deutsche Bank’s website and applied directly via the application portal. After a challenging application process, which included an online assessment, an interview with HR, and three interviews with DMBC team members with different levels of experience, I was more than happy to accept the offer to support the team for three months in their Frankfurt office.

Why did you join DBMC?

We live in times in which banks must redefine their role within society and adapt to technological changes in order to remain competitive. Megatrends such as digitalization, the increasing demand for sustainability, and the changing requirements of a new generation of customers are forcing the industry to transform like no other. When I applied to DBMC, I was looking for an opportunity to work on the most pressing and exciting issues the financial sector is facing. I wanted to join an institution with a global reach and a wide range of products and services to get the most out of my internship. As Deutsche Bank undergoes one of the largest transformations in its history, DBMC’s role as a strategic partner to senior management is more important than ever. After getting to know several team members and learning more about the projects as well as the impact the team is having on the bank, I had the feeling that DBMC would be a great place for me to learn more about the financial industry.

What projects (if not confidential) were you working on and what tasks were you entrusted with?

During my time at DBMC I was staffed on a project focusing on the future of work at Deutsche Bank. Due to changing expectations and requirements of both, the employees and the bank itself, the project was initiated to create a new and more flexible working environment for the future. Facilitated by the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, the aim was to create a hybrid working model. Over the course of three months, I supported the project team out of the Frankfurt office. Since the project affected various businesses of Deutsche Bank, I was able to get a better understanding of a bank’s organization and how different divisions and functions operate. Due to the global focus, I also had the chance to work with DBMC team members from London and New York. From the first day on, I felt like I was part of the team and was entrusted with a diverse and challenging set of tasks, including the preparation of Steering Committee presentations, project management documents as wells as the development of a business case as basis for a senior management decision. Other tasks included the identification of risks and dependencies within the project as wells as the preparation of workshops. My team members always gave me the opportunity to develop myself and take on responsibility. Not only was I able to participate in workshops with experts from different areas of the bank, but I also got the chance to proactively support and drive the conversation.

What have you learned during your internship / where do you feel you have developed the most because of the internship?

DBMC is a great place to develop yourself and learn from a very diverse group of people, ranging from former external consultants to bankers as wells as fresh graduates. From day one, I was able to benefit from the extensive experience of my project team members. As a consultant technical skills (e.g. PowerPoint and Excel) are essential to work effectively and efficiently. During my time at DBMC, I had the chance to improve these skills considerably with the help and feedback of my colleagues. One of the key learnings in this regard was not only the technical part, but also how to communicate and illustrate ideas in a way that creates more value for the project. What I really liked about working at DBMC was the culture of knowledge sharing. Colleagues with special expertise in a certain field share their knowledge with the rest of the team.
During many workstream meetings with experienced colleagues from all over the bank, I also learned more about driving and steering conversations to get the most out of it, even in difficult situations. In addition, my internship helped me to develop an impact-driven mindset and taught me to critically ask myself what I want to achieve with a certain meeting or task to maximize efficiency.

What advice would you pass on to other potential interns? (Alternatively: Would you recommend this internship to fellow students? If so, why?)

If you are interested in banking and want to explore the financial industry from different angles, there is hardly a better place than DBMC. The range of projects are as diverse as the bank’s product and service portfolio. Whether your interests lie in sustainability or digital implementations, there will be the right project for you. When you apply for an internship make sure to do your research on the bank’s transformation initiative as it is at the core of Deutsche Bank’s strategy and starting point of many DBMC projects. Furthermore, I can only recommend that you ask all the questions you have during the application process to figure out if you are a good fit for the bank and even more importantly, if Deutsche Bank is a good fit for you.

My interviews with DBMC, however, gave me the positive impression that the team wanted to hire me for my personality and brain; and not because I was a fairly well-educated resource. Also, since the work at DBMC has a long-lasting impact for the organization, it requires solutions that are optimal for the bank and sustainable at the same time – principles I could highly identify with.

A typical day at work:

According to the cliché, there are no typical days in consulting. But I tend to disagree. Depending on the project, days follow a similar pattern. Usually, it starts with a team meeting in the morning to discuss and align priorities for the day, which also helps me to structure my day effectively. Afterwards, it is an interplay between meetings and completing tasks as well as discussing ideas with colleagues and clients. Often, I also have a coffee with colleagues in the afternoon where we just chat and hang out a bit before we go back to work. The day is usually wrapped up by preparing meetings for the next day and sending out a couple of e-mails.

The most rewarding part of my job:

Seeing the progress you make professionally and personally within a short amount of time. Working at DBMC means that you are entrusted with responsibility early on. You will be exposed to clients without someone constantly watching over your shoulder, so it often means that you have to learn fast and independently. What helps in the process is knowing that you have a supportive team who stands behind you. It allows you to try out different approaches and, in the unlikely event that something goes wrong, you can always count on someone to help you out. This feeling of collective support and developing fast on your own terms is really valuable and reassures me of having made the right choice.

When I am not working:

I am either roaming the streets to take pictures (I am an avid photographer), listening to music or meeting friends. That’s of course, when I am not planning my next trip to explore other countries or learn new languages.

What brought you to Deutsche Bank, and Group Management Consulting in particular?

I am a technologist by education and worked in the Technology division of Deutsche Bank for nearly a decade in New York, London and Frankfurt, managing complex technical projects and organizational change. I decided to join DBMC because I wanted the opportunity to work with other divisions and at the same time learn about the various teams across the Bank. Being a part of DBMC also gives me the opportunity to work on very interesting topics which are of utmost importance to the Bank like the strategic transformation of the Bank. As a member of DBMC, not only do I have a chance to work on these topics but also to shape the direction of this transformation, which I find very exciting.

How does typical day at work look like?

A typical day in the life of a management consultant would vary depending on the lifecycle of the project. In essence, it would entail identifying root causes of issues, coming up with sustainable solutions and strategies, advising management and implementing solutions in a structured way. Equipped with consulting and project management skills, We enable DB’s senior management to break down complex issues/ problems and implement creative yet workable solutions either group-wide or for specific business divisions.

What is the most rewarding part of your job?

The most rewarding part of my job is two-fold. The first is, knowing that I have enabled and/ or contributed to solving an issue for the Bank and second is, that I am constantly learning on the job. Michelle Berges Cebrian joined Deutsche Bank Management Consulting (DBMC) as an analyst in March 2018. What brought you to Deutsche Bank, and Group Management Consulting in particular?

I studied Business Administration with a concentration in Finance during my Bachelor, and like most students completed different internships during this time. One of my internships was in the strategy department of a bank, which is when I discovered my passion for both the banking sector as well as the possibility to set strategic goals and thereby shape a corporation’s future. I then pursued a Master in Finance at ESADE in Barcelona, where I was able to combine both my interest in the financial industry and a strategic perspective on its future. My first contact with DBMC was through a fellow student of mine who completed his summer internship at DBMC in Frankfurt. I was really intrigued about the department as he told me about the high impact projects he worked on, but especially his positive experiences with the team members. Once I was able to confirm this positive picture of the DBMC team myself during my interview process, I decided that this was the perfect place to launch my career and, thus, started working at DBMC a couple of months later.

How do you like the team structures at DBMC?

Teams always vary in size, depending on the project – I have worked in a team of as little as 3 people, as well as in teams with up to 15 people. Independent of the team’s size however, it is always ensured that every member plays a vital part, has the responsibility for a certain range of tasks, and interacts with the relevant stakeholders. Nonetheless, there is still room to make mistakes and to ask for help – at DBMC you will always receive as much support as needed while ensuring that every team member has the opportunity to learn and grow with each challenge. I also genuinely like that we have many young colleagues here at DBMC, which means that we get on very well on a personal level and often socialize after work or on weekends.

You mentioned personal development through team-based project work. Can you describe that in more detail?

One of the most important aspects for me at DBMC is that we are continuously encouraged to develop ourselves. Part of this includes rotating to different projects approximately every three to six months and discovering new departments. Although this can be overwhelming when you only have little prior experience around a particular topic, it allows us to learn more about the bank and deepen our knowledge. Furthermore, here at DBMC every team member sets their own goals together with their line manager and regularly reviews and discusses how to best achieve them. During my time here, my previous and future project managers often talked to each other before I started a new project with them in order to understand where my strengths and weaknesses lie and how they can best support me in achieving my development goals.

What personal goals have you set yourself?

Since starting at DBMC I have set a variety of goals. Firstly, I wanted to work at least on one project in every DB business division to understand the various business models within a universal bank and build a network across divisions and departments. Moreover, I would like to especially focus on developing my analytical and problem-solving skills during my future projects. Lastly, I would like to improve my communication and presentation skills, which I hope to do during my projects but also with the help of external trainings.

Do you have any key advice for students or recent graduates who might be interested in working at DBMC?

I genuinely believe that the subject you studied is not the most important aspect during the application process. Instead, your interest in and passion for the banking landscape in general and Deutsche Bank in particular, as well as dealing with strategic issues is crucial. For me it is important to see that my colleagues are as motivated as I am to work on the bank’s current issues and help shape the bank’s future. To do so, it is obviously important to have good analytical, quantitative, problem-solving and communication skills. These skills will be tested in the interviews and preparation is key. At the same time, the personal fit at DBMC is at least equally important. We have a great team here that gets on well and has fun, is open-minded and always keen to experience new things together.

Is there still time for personal interests alongside your work?

Of course! In my opinion the key is to organize yourself well. Sports are very important to me, therefore I started to go for a run with my dog in the mornings before work. Those of us at DBMC who are up for the challenge also have the opportunity to participate in a tough mudder as a team once a year. As the name suggests, this is a very muddy and demanding matter (and for me means at least a week of very sore muscles), but it has always been a lot of fun and proved to be a great team building activity. In the past, I also played tennis on a competitive level. While I do not have time to do it competitively anymore, I still love to play tennis with friends or colleagues on the weekend. Lastly, I am extremely passionate about football. I follow nearly every single game of my favourite team FC Barcelona, either at home together with my family or on special occasions at Camp Nou in Barcelona!

Nach Abschluss meines Bachelorstudiums an der ESB Reutlingen habe ich 2010 als Junior Consultant im Deutsche Bank Management Consulting begonnen. Dem voraus ging ein Praktikum im Rahmen des Studiums, welches mir die Tür für eine Festanstellung geöffnet hat. Bei der Deutschen Bank habe ich von 2010 – 2015 im Inhouse Consulting und Group Strategy gearbeitet. Ende 2015 habe ich die Bank verlassen, um mein Masterstudium an der Frankfurt School of Finance & Management zu absolvieren. In dieser Zeit habe ich auch weitergehende Erfahrungen in der externen Beratung, mit Fokus auf Change und Transformation, sammeln können. Im März 2019 bin ich als Projektmanagerin zu DBMC zurückgekehrt, wo mir meine bisherigen, vielfältigen Erfahrungen zu Gute kommen.

Was ich in meiner Freizeit mache:

Meine Freizeit verbringe ich am liebsten in der Natur, in den Bergen oder auch am Meer. Auch im, mitunter hektischen, Alltag versuche ich so viel Ausgleich wie möglich zu schaffen, zum Beispiel mit meinem Pferd, beim Radfahren oder Laufen am Main.

Ann-Kathrin absolviert bei der Deutschen Bank ein Praktikum im Bereich Compliance und teilt ihre Erfahrungen: „Die Hilfsbereitschaft und das Engagement meiner Kollegen haben mich sehr beeindruckt“

Ann-Kathrin studiert im Masterstudiengang VWL an der WWU Münster. Auf die Idee, ein Praktikum bei der Deutschen Bank zu absolvieren, brachte sie ein Kommilitone, der über seine Praktikumszeit viel Gutes zu berichten hatte. Im Bereich Compliance, der sich darauf fokussiert, die Integrität der Bank ebenso zu schützen wie ihre Reputation bei Kunden, Shareholdern, Behörden und in der Gesellschaft, erlebt die Studentin den Kulturwandel im Banking besonders deutlich mit. Zugleich hat sie die Möglichkeit, viele Teams und Funktionen kennenzulernen, um so am Ende ein relativ umfassendes Bild von Compliance als Ganzem zu haben. Was sie darüber hinaus an ihrem Praktikum schätzt, erzählt Ann-Kathrin hier.

Wie sind Sie auf die Deutsche Bank aufmerksam geworden? Aus welchem Grund haben Sie sich im Anschluss zu einer Bewerbung entschlossen?

Bei der Wahl meines Praktikums kam es mir vor allem darauf an, dass das Praktikum gut strukturiert ist und der Fokus auf der Praxis und dem Erlernen entsprechender Fähigkeiten liegt. Ein Studienfreund hatte mir zuvor von seinem Praktikum bei der Deutschen Bank berichtet und sich dabei insbesondere von den vielfältigen Aufgabenbereichen und der guten Betreuung begeistert gezeigt. Das war für mich ein entscheidender Grund, um mich selbst um einen Praktikumsplatz bei der Bank zu bewerben.

Gibt es ein besonderes Erlebnis aus Ihren Bewerbungsgesprächen, das Ihnen im Gedächtnis geblieben ist?

Generell hat es mich positiv überrascht, dass die Rückmeldung im Bewerbungsprozess sehr rasch erfolgte. Aber auch die Möglichkeit, neben der Stelle, um die man sich bewirbt, noch eine zweite Präferenz für einen anderen Bereich anzugeben, ist ein großer Vorteil – schließlich erhöht man dadurch seine Chancen auf einen Platz. Gleichzeitig kann so auch die individuelle Qualifikation bei der Bewerbung besser berücksichtigt werden.

Wodurch zeichnet sich Ihrer Ansicht nach Ihre Praxiserfahrung aus?

Bei meinem Praktikum wird viel Wert darauf gelegt, dass ich alle Teams und Abteilungen kennenlerne, damit ich ein umfassendes Bild des Aufgabenbereichs von Compliance bekomme. Gleichzeitig werde ich in möglichst viele Thematiken mit einbezogen.

Welche Erwartungen hatten Sie? Gab es Dinge, die Sie besonders beeindruckt haben?

Ich hatte auf jeden Fall erwartet, ein äußerst vielfältiges Arbeitsgebiet vorzufinden. Vor diesem Hintergrund hat es mich sehr gefreut, dass sich jeder meiner Kollegen so viel Zeit genommen hat, um mir sein Arbeitsgebiet vorzustellen. So kann ich die ganze Bandbreite der Compliance-Aufgaben kennenlernen.

Wie sind Sie momentan eingesetzt und was waren Ihre Highlights während Ihrer Zeit bei uns bisher?

Ich bin momentan in Compliance für den Bereich Corporate Finance zuständig und habe die Möglichkeit, etwa nach der Hälfte meiner Praktikumszeit zu wechseln, um die Aufgaben des Bereichs Markets in Compliance ebenfalls kennenzulernen. Dadurch bekomme ich noch mehr Einblicke in das Aufgabenprofil, und gleichzeitig werde ich in sehr viele Aufgaben und Prozesse involviert. So durfte ich beispielsweise in meiner Zeit hier bereits selbst einen Teil einer Compliance-Schulung halten, und auch bei Meetings oder Beratungsgesprächen mit anderen Geschäftsbereichen bin ich mit dabei.

Wie erleben Sie Ihre Arbeitsumgebung bei der Deutschen Bank?

Die Kollegen sowie auch alle anderen Mitarbeiter, mit denen man gelegentlich zu tun hat, sind immer freundlich und hilfsbereit. Gleichzeitig herrscht eine sehr kollegiale Stimmung über die Hierarchieebenen hinweg – dadurch fällt gerade die Eingewöhnung viel leichter.

Der Kulturwandel im Banking ist natürlich auch in meinem Bereich zu erleben – insbesondere deshalb, weil Compliance bei der Umsetzung von Maßnahmen im Zuge des Kulturwandels eine große Rolle spielt und auch die einzelnen Geschäftsbereiche berät. Gerade das macht Compliance für mich zu einem spannenden Tätigkeitsfeld.

Was hat Sie am meisten überrascht bei der Deutschen Bank? Womit hätten Sie nicht gerechnet? Was waren Ihre Erwartungen, bevor Sie angefangen haben – und wurden sie erfüllt oder nicht?

Mich haben die große Hilfsbereitschaft der Kollegen und ihr Engagement bei meiner Einarbeitung als neue Praktikantin in die Abteilungsaufgaben positiv überrascht. Gleichzeitig empfand ich die Atmosphäre und das freundliche Miteinander in meinem Team als sehr angenehm. Ich hatte ein sehr internationales Arbeitsumfeld erwartet, und diese Annahme hat sich auch als richtig erwiesen. Dank vieler internationaler Kontakte finden Telefonate oder Gespräche häufig auf Englisch statt, und bei verschiedenen Aufgaben kommuniziert man dann ebenfalls in englischer Sprache.

Was haben Sie persönlich für sich und Ihre Karriereentwicklung mitgenommen

Ich habe gelernt, dass Netzwerken sehr wichtig ist: Es ergeben sich immer Möglichkeiten, Kontakte zu knüpfen – es liegt an einem selbst, diese zu nutzen. Das menschliche Miteinander hat hier in der Bank eine große Bedeutung.

Spielen Angebote rund um Work-Life-Balance – wie Gesundheitsvorsorge, Arbeitszeitkonten, Kitaplätze – für Sie eine Rolle?

Bei meiner späteren Berufswahl werden solche Aspekte natürlich auch eine Rolle spielen. Für mein Praktikum waren das allerdings noch keine entscheidenden Kriterien.

Welchen Tipp können Sie zukünftigen Bewerbern geben? Was sollten die Kandidaten mitbringen?

Ich kann die Karriere-Website der Deutschen Bank sehr empfehlen: Hier findet man nicht nur viele Informationen über die Bank und das Angebot für Bewerber, sondern auch nützliche Ratschläge für den Bewerbungsprozess. Man sollte sich in jedem Fall sehr gründlich auf das Bewerbungsgespräch vorbereiten, indem man sich mit der Firmengeschichte, -philosophie und dem entsprechenden Geschäftsfeld der Deutschen Bank auseinandersetzt sowie dem Aufgabenbereich der Abteilung, in die man einsteigen möchte. Darüber hinaus ist es vorteilhaft, wenn man über relevante aktuelle Entwicklungen informiert ist. Außerdem sollte sich ein Bewerber, der im Bereich Compliance starten will, nicht nur für die Finanzindustrie interessieren, sondern auch mit regulatorischen und rechtlichen Sachverhalten zurechtkommen.

Was machen Sie gerne in Ihrer Freizeit?

Am liebsten unternehme ich etwas mit meinen Freunden oder der Familie – das reicht von gemeinsamen Kochabenden bis hin zu Erlebnisreisen. In meiner Freizeit mache ich darüber hinaus gerne Sport, wobei bei gutem Wetter vor allem Outdooraktivitäten wie Joggen oder Inlineskaten auf dem Programm stehen. Ansonsten verbringe ich meine Zeit auch gerne mal mit einem guten Buch.

Wenn Sie für ein paar Stunden in die Rolle einer berühmten/historischen Person schlüpfen dürften, durch wessen Augen würden Sie die Welt gerne einmal sehen – und warum?

Mich beeindrucken Menschen, die „Neues“ vorangebracht haben – sei es, dass sie eine wichtige Erfindung/Entdeckung gemacht oder aber neue Denkweisen durchgesetzt haben, selbst wenn sie dabei auf massive Widerstände und Ressentiments getroffen sind. Daher würde ich gerne für einen Tag beispielsweise in die Rolle von Thomas Edison, Carl Benz oder Voltaire schlüpfen.
